A few months ago I ventured over to Hoboken for the Radio Free Song Club’s monthly taping. Just got back from New Mexico, where Mikael & I were running around shooting some photos for my next album, “Deep Below Heaven” (which will be out this Fall). I’ve been hunkered down in the studio working on the record and we haven’t been doing too many shows lately. But this Sunday the band & I will be playing at Ace Hotel, NYC and will be doing a few songs off the new record so come join us!!

Starting work on the new record!

After a year of writing and refining songs for the new record, we started recording this week here in Brooklyn. The new tunes are taking form! Mikael Kennedy stopped in and took some pictures of the band at work. That’s Adam Lomeo on guitar (a hand-made Michael Cadiz guitar at that), Scott Colberg on bass & Arthur Vint on drums.

My brother Michael, an amazing classical guitarist & songwriter has always been a huge musical inspiration to me. A couple years ago he started learning to build guitars and just completed another gorgeous instrument. This summer he flew out to visit & play a show with me, bringing me the first steel string guitar he built. It sounds incredible and is absolutely beautiful. Check out his process here! “I will fly away”

I was stoked to get this tune from Matt Embree the other day. Before the last show of the Calling All Crows tour Bonnie Paine, Lauren Coleman & I practiced “I will fly away” in the stairwell of our hotel and Matt caught a recording of it.
